Kitten Being Born

We were fostering this mother cat from our local humane society. The mother had an upper respiratory infection which she gave to the kittens. Within 10 days, they were all dead, despite our best attempts to save them. It was quite heartbreaking. The little orange one, Tom-Tom, lasted the longest because he was such a fighter but even he finally passed on.Some additional notes:1. I have never ever had a mother cat reject or "eat" her kittens because of people handling them. I think this is an old wive's tale or perhaps might happen with wild cats, not pet cats. We are always very respectful of the mother and her space. Kittens should be handled frequently so that they are accustomed to humans, not left alone to go feral. This particular cat gave birth on my son's bed and actually seemed to want us to be with her.2. Over the years of fostering, we have lost many kittens, usually the last one or two, because the mother just forgets about them. I have since begun intervening by "pretend licking" them by rubbing with a clean cloth to remove the membrane and stimulating them to breathe. I can't imagine a kitten staying alive in the membrane for an hour or two (as someone commented) without any attention and surviving. The placenta detaches quickly after birth and there would be no way for the kitten to breathe through the membrane, hence suffocation would occur within minutes of not getting enough air.3. If you love cats and kittens, contact your local humane society about fostering mama cats. It is a very rewarding way to volunteer. And please spay & neuter your pets!

oh, what a tragedy for you, but it certainly wasn't for a lack of trying. thank you for being such a wonderful foster mom. I adopted an adult kitty who's been with me almost 10 years now, and I just wish I had room for more!

Nicely done video. So nice to hear your daughter whispering and being very quiet around the kittens! Good experience for her...sorry the kits died. Hope she knows this happens without it being anyone's fault. Children sometimes think that...

when you say they died, did the momma die too?? So sad for her to see her kittens die, what did you do to comfort her (if she lived) ps i read about cats sometimes eating their young my dog ate a few of her young once but looking back on it they seemed to be the weakest ones and she had such a handful I even had to bottle feed a few with special vet milk :)

We need more people like you. You actually inspire me to do this kind of volunteer work. Its really rewarding and the mommy and her babies can be around people who are caring. Sometimes you might lose a few witch is sad but thats life sadly. Keep up your good work.

My cat whisker had two black kittens but one of them died because she didn't lick it. Sadly we weren't there so it didn't survive. Nice video though!
