Technically it would be two dimensional but in any case it probably a reference to three dimensional chess which was popularized in the Original Star Trek

A clip from back when Doctor Who was a truly great show.It's nothing short of amazing how the BBC had in it's possesion one of the best television shows ever produced, and then decided to spend pretty much the entire 1980's doing every thing they could think of to completely wreck it.
